At the Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day regimental dinner on Wednesday, the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to combating terrorism and all threats to national security.
Gen. Oluyede emphasized that the military alone cannot safeguard the nation’s heritage. “The way forward lies in a whole-of-society approach”, he said, calling for stronger ties with local communities and closer collaboration with sister security agencies.
Despite significant challenges, he noted, Nigerian troops have consistently prevailed and earned the trust of the public, bridging gaps between the military and civilians. “May the spirit of comradeship reinforce the bonds that unite us as one Armed Forces family,” he added.
Paying tribute to fallen heroes, Gen. Oluyede said, “Remembrance Day is a time to honour the brave men and women of our Armed Forces. Our freedom is built on the sacrifices of our forebears and sustained by comrades who hold the line across the country”.
On his part, Minister of Defence, Gen. Christopher Musa (rtd), described the celebration as “the heartbeat of Nigeria’s military heritage”, recognising the professionalism, bravery, and resilience of serving officers while honouring those who gave their lives defending the nation.
“Nigerian troops continue to confront complex threats with unwavering dedication.
“The peace and security enjoyed by our nation are products of their vigilance, sacrifice, and steadfast commitment to duty”, Gen. Musa said.
