The Armed Forces of Nigeria has confirmed the arrest of 16 officers over alleged acts of indiscipline and violations of service regulations, in what military authorities described as part of routine efforts to uphold discipline and professionalism.
This was disclosed on Saturday in a statement issued by the Director of Defence Information, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau.
According to Gusau, preliminary investigations revealed that the affected officers had become disgruntled due to repeated failures in promotion examinations and concerns over career stagnation. Some of them were already under investigation for other offences and are either facing trial or awaiting court-martial proceedings.
“Investigations have revealed that their grievances stemmed largely from perceived career stagnation caused by repeated failure in promotion examinations, among other issues,” the statement read.
“Some of the apprehended officers had been under jurisdiction for various offences, either awaiting or undergoing trial. Their conduct was deemed incompatible with the standards of military service.”
The Defence Headquarters emphasized that the investigation is ongoing and, once concluded, any officer found culpable will face the full disciplinary process, in line with the Armed Forces’ regulations.
“Upon completion of investigation, indicted officers will face the full military disciplinary process in accordance with established procedures to ensure accountability and preserve professionalism within the Armed Forces,” the statement added.
Disciplinary, Not Political
Brigadier General Gusau stressed that the arrests are strictly disciplinary and part of routine internal checks aimed at maintaining order, discipline, and loyalty within the ranks of the military.
“The Armed Forces will not tolerate behaviour that undermines the integrity of the institution or threatens its constitutional role under democratic authority,” Gusau stated.
The Armed Forces reaffirmed its commitment to its constitutional responsibilities, assuring Nigerians of its loyalty to democratic governance and continued professional conduct.
“The Armed Forces of Nigeria remains fully committed to its constitutional responsibilities and will remain professional at all times,” the statement concluded.
