
The city of Umuahia, Abia State capital, has welcomed contingents from 14 countries for the first International Para-Badminton Championship and the All-African Badminton Championship, scheduled to hold from September 30 to October 12, 2025.
Participating nations include Brazil, India, Peru, Cameroon, Benin Republic, Tunisia, Mauritius, Rwanda, Egypt, Zimbabwe, and others.
Abia State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Nwobilor Ananaba, represented by the Special Assistant to the Governor on Sports, Raymond Chima Ukwa, confirmed the arrival of delegations, revealing that 150 international players and 60 officials are expected.
He assured that the state government has provided world-class facilities, including best-standard nets and playing mats, alongside robust security for a safe and conducive tournament.
President of the Badminton Federation of Nigeria, Francis Orbih, praised Governor Alex Otti for hosting the global event, while Jeff Shigoli of the Badminton Confederation Africa and Dr Ahmed Reda of the Badminton World Federation commended Nigeria’s efforts, noting the country is the third African nation to host para-badminton activities.
